Passing....

I am very sad to say that sweet little Ferdinand went to be in Heaven on July 19, 2013.  He went peacefully during nap time after giving Mommy and Daddy a quick chance to say goodbye.  Ferdi may be gone from this world but he will never, ever be forgotten.  We miss you, sweet boy.  Sleep well.

I can't believe it has been so long since I've posted an update.

I'm doing GREAT!  After my big illness and hospitalization last summer I am doing much, much better.  I don't have any pain at all!!!  :)  The only thing that has really changed is that Mommy and Daddy have to help me go to the bathroom now.  I hold it too long otherwise and then I get bladder infections.  If that happens again I might have to go to the hospital, and I would much rather stay at home with Mommy and Daddy.

I still spend most of my time just snuggling, but I love to chew on my blanket.  I make sure to tell Daddy every day when it is time for my Greenie, by giving him "chi paws".  That's when I paw at him over and over and over again until he gives me what I want.  It works every time!

I am getting ready to go on a long car trip with my family down to California.  We always have such a great time, and I get to swim with Mommy in the lake.  I just hope the water is warm.  :)

At the vet

We dropped.Ferdinand off at the vet this morning for observation.  They are going to monitor and administer his meds for the day and call if there are any changes.  We hope the little guy is going to be okay, but we are kind of in limbo.  Things could go either way at this point.  Say a prayer for Ferdinand.  We just want his pain to stop.

A rough couple of days

Today has been really tough for me and my family. I started hurting a couple of days ago so Mom and Dad gave me some medicine to take away the pain called Tramadol. The medicine worked pretty well and they only gave it to me when I started to hurt really bad. Sometime last night I woke up in a LOT of pain. I cried and cried to let Mommy and Daddy know. They tried to make me feel better and gave me some more of the Tramadol, but it didn't work this time. I was still hurting really bad.

We all got in the car and headed down to the VCA Veterinary Specialty Center of Seattle, in Lynnwood. Mom called ahead to let them know we were coming. They were able to see me right away and check me out. The technician took me in back to help me go potty and take a sample of my urine. I didn't like it, but I was a very good boy. Then the doctor came in and took a look at me. She could tell right away that I was hurting a lot, so she didn't poke and prod me. She just asked Mom and Dad a lot of questions. She said that Dr. Kline happened to be there this morning and would be able to see me and do an exam, but it might be a little while. The technician came back in and took me into the back for some blood tests and a little nap. She told Mom and Dad to go get some lunch and she would call after Dr. Kline was able to do the examination.

After they finished lunch, Mom and Dad came back to wait some more. Dr. Kline is a wonderful doctor so she is a very busy lady. A little bit later the other doctor came back and told Mom and Dad that I was doing alright and resting. Dr. Kline wants me to go on some new medicine and see if it makes me better. Nobody is quite sure what is causing my pain, though. It could be from my meningoencephalitis or it could be from the slipped disc in my neck. The only two ways to find out for sure is by giving me an MRI or doing surgery. Mommy and Daddy, as well as my doctors, worry that I might have a hard time with the anesthesia so they want to avoid those two things if they can. We are all hoping that this new medicine will help me feel better soon so we can all get a good night's sleep.

Speaking of sleep, it's time for me to take another nap. Thanks for checking in to see how I'm doing, and have a great night!

My new sister....

I am so sorry I haven't written on my blog for so long. I didn't realize it had been soooo long. :( Since I last wrote there have been some pretty big changes in my life.

I went on a road trip down to California with my Mommy, Daddy, sister, and Mama Chica. We went back to Pinecrest Lake and spent about two weeks there. It was great. I got to swim and lay in the sun. I loved it! At least until we were on our way back home and I got a bladder infection. Mommy says it's because of the medicine I have to take for the swelling in my brain (Prednisone). I really wish I didn't have to take that stuff anymore. It makes me cranky and I get all kinds of infections from it. :(

Mommy started back to school at the end of August, but Daddy gets to stay home and take care of me every day. He has an owie in his neck so he can't go to work everyday. I feel bad for him and give him lots of snuggles to make him feel better. Daddy and I take care of the house (when he feels okay) and run errands for Mommy. I love staying home with my Daddy every day. :)

A few days before Christmas, Mommy and Daddy adopted another sister for me. Her name is Isabella. She is pretty cool cuz she is a Chi like me and is about my size. She knows to give me space when I am cranky and snuggles with me when I am not. I am still getting used to her, but I think that she can stay. Besides, she and I share the same birthday. Nobody knows for sure how old she is, but the vet thinks she might be about as old as me, so Mommy and Daddy gave her the same birthday as me. I love watching Isabella and Moxie when they wrestle and play in the house. They are crazy!

Isabella

I also have a new cousin. His name is Osito and he lives in Friday Harbor with my auntie, uncle and Mama Chica. We think he is a Chi-Weenie (a chihuahua/dachshund mix, but are not sure). He is still a puppy so he hasn't learned to give me my space. I'm sure it won't take him very long, though. Especially when he tries to steal my nummies and I have to bite him on the nose.

I haven't been working as hard as I should on my walking and exercising, but my New Year's resolution is to do better and get stronger. (I have to help Daddy remember to work with me every day, more than once a day.)

I will do my best not to let so much time go by before I post to my blog again. Love to everyone!!!

My new business cards

Since people are always asking Mommy and Daddy about me (mostly because I'm so cute), Mommy decided to order some business cards for me to hand out. It's got my title, Cutest Dog Ever, an the address to my blog. I guess this is as good as incentive as ever for me to keep up a little better on updating my blog.

Since I last wrote I have had something exciting happen: I was interviewed and photographed for my part in a book. This wonderful lady, Yvonne, called up Mommy and Daddy and asked if they would be interested in having my story written up as part of her new book. She has already written one book called, Blind Faith, and is now working on her second. My whole family had such an amazing time spending a couple of hours in the backyard talking with Yvonne. Instead of showing off, I decided to play it cool and just lay on the blanket with Mommy and Daddy. I did get into my wheelchair for a little while, but didn't walk around a whole lot. I was a little shy about all the special attention I was getting. I'm not sure when the book will be coming out, but I will let you know when I do. I'm also excited to see the pictures that she took. I always enjoy looking at pictures of myself since I am so cute. :)

Here is a link to Yvonne's first book. When the new book comes out I will put a link to that as well. http://www.buybooksontheweb.com/product.aspx?ISBN=0-7414-5496-3

My health has been pretty good. I still have a slipped disc in my back, so I have to take pain pills for that. The pain pills make me sleepy, but take away the pain and the related crankiness. Mommy really appreciates this because it means I won't bite her when she snuggles me. (I only do that when I hurt really bad).

My bloodwork continues to improve. Each time I go in for a blood test, about every 12 weeks or so, my good levels continue to stay good and the bad levels continue to improve. It's all kinds of technical, medical talk, so I can't be expected to remember it all, but Dr. Kifney always tells Mommy and Daddy that things look Great! This makes them so happy they usually give me an extra treat or extra snuggles.

Over this past weekend I spent a really long day with lots of my extended family. Eleven of us piled into Uncle Ron's motorhome and headed from Mt. Vernon down to Shelton. Normally we would have taken the ferry across from Whidbey Island, but it was cancelled due to low tides. We had such a fun time, though, that I'm glad we spent the extra time in the motorhome. Mommy played games with all her relatives and laughed and told stories. I got to nap for most of the ride, which I always enjoy. Once we got to Shelton I got to meet lots of Mommy's other relatives, some of which she hadn't seen in over 20 years. It was a beautiful warm day and I spent most of it lying down in the cool grass in the shade. I got to have little bites of the cake that was served, and Mommy even shared some of her vegetables with me. I did get a little overwhelmed towards the end of the day and bit two of the kids that were playing with me. Mommy told them not to put their faces right into mine, but I guess they didn't listen very well. I felt bad afterward, but I tried to warn them with my growl and my "LuciFerdi" look. (That's what Mommy and Daddy call it when I get upset and show all my teeth). We all had a really good time and I got to sleep all the way home, too. Mommy even let me snuggle on her lap a little on the ride home instead of in my little bed. We were all really tired and slept in pretty late on Sunday.

Now that Mommy and Daddy are on summer break (at least for a few weeks) I am hoping that they will take me on lots of car rides, walks, and bike rides. I love exploring new places and trying new things. Mommy was given her Grandma's old bicycle and is fixing it up so we can go for some family bike rides. Now she just needs to hurry up and get a basket so we can go for our first ride together.

It's way past my bedtime, so I will stop for tonight. I'll do my best to update the blog each time something fun or exciting happens. It may be once a week or once a month. Until then, enjoy your life while you can. You never know how long or short it will be. :)

2010

Hi everyone!

I guess it's been a while since I've written, but that's because my life has been pretty "normal" lately. At least normal for me. :) Although I did get some good news from the vet recently. I went in for a routine blood test to check my liver enzymes as well as all my other levels. The test was done on a Thursday and mom and dad had to wait until Tuesday to hear what the results were. But, the results were definitely worth waiting for. I don't remember all the technical stuff, but I do remember the vet saying that there was one level that was up around 6,000 and it is now down under 1,000. All in all, my levels are almost normal, compared to other dogs my age and size. This is great news, and hopefully it means that i can go off all my medication pretty soon. I don't know that for sure, but I am trying to be optimistic here.

I started off taking a full 5 mg tablet of prednisone in the morning and another at night. I am now down to 1/4 tablet once a day! I am also off all the other medications i was taking. I am so happy to be taking fewer medications. They always make me feel yucky and sleepy.

Mommy and Daddy changed the food that Moxie and I get to a brand called, Before Grain. They bought the salmon flavor which Moxie and I both love. I get that at every meal (about 1 tbsp per meal) along with some kind of fresh food. Usually I get peas/carrots but sometimes i get rice or pumpkin mixed in. Moxie is a much pickier eater than I am so Mommy and Daddy give her that yucky stuff from the cans. I like my peas and carrots so much better than that stuff.

I don't really like to be out in the cold weather and this has made my exercise time pretty difficult. Mommy and Daddy would love to get me a treadmill, but they are SO expensive. Mommy and Daddy are struggling just to pay my regular vet bills, so I don't think this will be an option. Besides, I don't even know if I would like it. I might be too scared to use it. I'll do my best to exercise as much as I feel comfortable, but it's hard when it's so cold and wet outside. Oh, how I long for warm, summer days!
